There are numerous Bible verses and quotes from the Holy Fathers of the Church that express how important and a blessing it is to show generosity and love for the poor. Jesus talked about it many times in the Bible, here are a couple:
And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Luke 6:20-21
Jesus said to him, If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me. Matthew 19:21
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. Luke 4:16-19
So for my second comic strip, I wanted just one frame showing Father Gabriel giving alms to a homeless man, showing how important it is for all of us to take a moment from our own busy life and show love for someone in need.
As much as I love the above verses, I decided upon a verse from the Book of Psalms:
Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. Psalm 41:1
And by the way, the homeless man in this strip is George the Homeless, who will appear in a future episode of Father Gabriel’s animated series.
